The Day I Stopped Waiting for Someone Else to Fix Me

I’m someone who appreciates convenience and efficiency. I will pay the DoorDash delivery fee if it means I can save time elsewhere. Looking back, I realize this has always been who I am: let’s get it done. I find the most efficient way forward, solve the problem, and move on.

So when I was choosing birth control years ago and the IUD was presented as an option, it felt like the perfect fit. One appointment, years of not having to think about birth control, and one less thing on my already full plate—it felt right for the season of life I was in.

That was all well and good for the 6–7 years it lasted. Then it was time to take it out, and because it had worked so well for me, I thought, “Let’s put a new one in!”

So I made the appointment, had the old one removed, and had the new one inserted. Almost instantly, I knew something wasn’t right.

I started noticing changes I had never experienced before. My skin, which had always been relatively clear, suddenly felt unfamiliar. I was dealing with painful breakouts that affected not just my appearance, but my confidence. On top of that, I had no energy. No matter how much sleep I got, I needed more, and it never felt like enough.

I didn’t recognize myself when I looked in the mirror. I knew something had changed, and I wanted to understand why.

Now what you should also know about me is that I am not a passive person. I am not someone who will sit back, say “I have no idea what’s going on,” and hope something falls out of the sky to save me.

I am the person who will research all day and night, ask anyone who will listen, bring it up at every doctor’s appointment, and call multiple doctor’s offices searching for answers.

I will do everything I know how to do to understand what is happening, all while crying myself to sleep because I was so upset with how I felt and how my skin looked.

Everyone told me I was fine, but I knew something wasn’t right. I felt like the reality of what I was experiencing didn’t match the answers I was being given.

Doctors ran labs and told me I was fine. My gynecologist even said, “I don’t know what’s wrong with your skin. Maybe you just have a ‘special’ type of acne.”

I couldn’t believe it.

I remember leaving that appointment feeling defeated. I wasn’t looking for someone to tell me something was wrong. I was looking for someone to help me understand what was happening.

I finally realized, like so many other times in my life, that I was going to have to advocate for myself and find answers another way.

I felt defeated and determined all at the same time. Inspired and hopeless. Somehow, both feelings existed together.

And I knew the only person who was going to help me was me.

I made the decision to dedicate myself to understanding my body. I was going to do whatever it took, and I began to turn inward.

I stopped searching for one thing to blame and started asking myself different questions:

What areas of my life needed more attention?
What habits were supporting me?
What habits were working against me?

I started working on my emotional health, my relationships, my movement, my routines, and the daily habits I had control over.

Healing didn’t happen overnight.

It wasn’t one product, one supplement, or one perfect routine.

It happened through small, consistent choices and learning to pay attention to the signals my body was giving me.

If you’re reading this and thinking, “I know something feels off, but I don’t know where to start,” I want you to know you are not alone.

I’ve walked this road myself, and I know what it feels like to keep searching for answers. That experience is why I created Wild Society.

If there’s one thing I hope you take away from my story, it’s this:

Your body isn’t your enemy. It is communicating with you.

Learning to listen was one of the greatest gifts I ever gave myself, and it is the same journey I hope to help other women begin.
